Backup Hyper-V VHD over WAN

In this example we Rsync Hyper-V VHD's over a WAN connection. This is to provide disaster recovery in the event of major disaster at the primary network location.

Shadow copies of the virtual machines need to be created for the synchronisation to work. In our tests, around 10% extra disk space is required to do this daily.

In our environment, we have 2tb of virtual machines to transfer. When replicating huge files which change daily, disk performance becomes important. We found that 4 x 3tb disks in Raid5 on our controller was not quite fast enough to complete replication in under a day (100mb/s), but raid 10 (300mb/s) was.

Daily email reporting means we can sleep easy knowing all our servers are replicated offsite.

Yintersync uses .NET Framework 2.0. To enable this on Hyper-V servers, type this at the consol.
