This is the setup we have configured for each of our networks. The yintersync server in the middle is common to all networks so there is one spot to centrally manage our entire backup and DR stratagy. In our testing a windows machine running deltacopy server as an rsync storage device provided us with the best performance at our DR site. This has the added benefit that the data at the DR site is hosted on a windows server so is easy to access. The virtual hosts are all Server 2008 R2 machines running Hyper-V, these backup all the VHDs live without any downtime to our DR site. The File server contains 1.2 million files that are replicated to the yintersync server with 5 iterations in case of the need to roll back individual documents. Offline and archive is provided by removable hard disks.
The Exchange and SQL servers replicatetheir mailstores/databases live to the yintersync server as well as to the DR site. Any important data on the desktop pcs and laptops are replicated onto the yintersync server either over the lan or via the internet depending on where they are. All communication is encrypted by SSH except for the connection to the DR site which is encrypted with a VPN.
